Hotel Waitlist vs exit-intent popups

An exit-intent popup tries to stop a guest leaving, usually with a discount or a newsletter sign-up. Hotel Waitlist lets them leave, records the dates and room they wanted, and contacts them when that room can actually be booked.

Side by side

Hotel WaitlistExit-intent popup
What triggers it A guest leaves your booking engine without booking, or searches dates with no availability. The visitor's cursor moves towards closing the tab, or a similar leaving signal on mobile.
What it knows about the guest Their email, the dates they searched and the room type they wanted. Usually just that they are leaving, plus an email if they enter one.
When the guest hears from you When a matching room is available: a cancellation, a sold-out date reopening, or a room approaching arrival unsold. Straight away, on the page, whether or not their dates are available.
What the guest is offered An offer chosen for that guest and those dates. Typically the same discount for every visitor who triggers it.
How you pay 10% commission on bookings Hotel Waitlist delivers. Nothing for sign-ups that don't book. Usually a monthly subscription, whether or not it leads to bookings, plus the cost of the discount itself.
Where the booking happens In your own booking engine, with the guest's dates pre-selected. In your own booking engine.

When exit-intent popups are the better choice

  • You want to grow a general newsletter list from every visitor, not only guests with specific dates.
  • You are running a site-wide promotion and want every visitor to see it.
  • Your problem is guests hesitating over price on dates that are available, rather than dates that are sold out.

The two can run on the same site. A popup speaks to a guest while they are on the page; Hotel Waitlist follows up afterwards, once there is something to offer.

Questions

Is Hotel Waitlist an exit-intent popup?

No. Hotel Waitlist does show a prompt on your booking engine, but its job is to record what the guest wanted, not to stop them leaving with a discount. The follow-up happens later, by email, when a matching room is available.

Why not just offer every leaving guest a discount?

A blanket discount goes to guests who might have booked anyway, and it can't help a guest whose dates are sold out. Hotel Waitlist waits until the guest's room is available and chooses the offer for that guest.
